Village East?

Raleigh Village East History

A few years ago, a small group of neighbors investigated establishing an “Aging in Place” virtual village that would encompass the contiguous neighborhoods of Pilot Mill, Capitol Park, Mordecai, East Mordecai, Oakdale, Oakwood, and Capitol Heights. In 2019 we formed a Board of Directors and were granted 501(c)3 non-profit status incorporated as Raleigh Village East. RVE began working on fund-raising efforts and held public forums, social and educational events and more. During the pandemic our outreach focused on getting seniors vaccinated, and through those efforts we explored expanding our network to include additional downtown neighborhoods including Idlewild, College Park, Madonna Acres, Chavis Park, and South Park. We are a work in progress, and we invite you to join us in this effort.

Aging in Place means making a conscious decision to stay in one’s home for as long as possible with the comfort, security, and social life needed to support healthy and happy living. This may include adding supplementary services to maintain quality of life.

The Village Concept

Neighbors have been helping neighbors for generations, but the concept of Aging in Place supported by an organized neighborhood effort was actually initiated and first executed in 2001 on Beacon Hill in Boston. Today, the Village movement is nation-wide, with multiple Villages in all 50 states. The heart and soul of the Village is people helping people, so Villages tend to be compact geographically to leverage neighborhood connectivity and local volunteer networks and services.

A 2010 survey by AARP found that nearly 90% of older adults in America want to stay in their homes and communities as they age. The Village helps older adults to age in a place of their choosing, connected to their communities with the supports and tools they need to create successful aging in their own way.

Research indicates that social isolation is a substantial risk factor for dementia in community-dwelling (non-institutionalized) older adults. Being part of a Village helps to create a social network that helps seniors stay engaged, pursue their interests with others, and have fun.
